Greetings from the Mid East Zone chapter of Indian Phytopathological Society (IPS).

College of Forestry and Hill Agriculture, G B Pant University of Agriculture & Technology, Hill Campus, Ranichauri is involved in generating and dissemination of cutting edge technologies in the areas of hill agriculture, horticulture, forestry and allied areas. Plant protection is a major component in the endeavor for sustainable and increased production of cereals, pulses, oilseeds, fruits and vegetables. Managing diseases to attain a healthy and productive crop is one of the major functional components in successful crop production. The benefits of green revolution with its reliance on high yielding varieties and input intensive agriculture have started to wane away and some of its negative aspects have been bothering the policy makers and planners. Although, green revolution has given us self-sufficiency food production but now a new revolution is required for sustainable crop production without having any adverse impact on the environment. The scientific community is relentlessly engaged in evolving ecofriendly strategies for plant disease management and is exploring the research areas on biological control, manipulations in cultural practices, biofungicides, botanicals, screening for resistance, disease forewarning, use of molecular and biotechnological tools and integrated pest and disease management strategies, to tackle ever arising plant disease problems.

In view of the above, IPS-MEZ would like to take a proactive role in addressing the aforesaid issues by holding a National Symposium on "Advances in Microbial Diversity and Disease Management for Sustainable Crop Production, on the sidelines of the IPS-MEZ annual meeting at College of Forestry and Hill Agriculture in the backdrop of Uttarakhand Himalayas during Oct. 3-5, 2008. The present symposium is aimed to provide a forum to the scientists, students and policy makers from various fields of agriculture, forestry, horticulture and information technology to discuss the problems of plant pathogens, their management and beneficial utilization for human welfare. The symposium is an attempt to showcase advances made by researchers for disease management in the above areas and to integrate the spectrum of management measures to reduce yield losses due to diseases. Four broad technical sessions have been chalked out viz., advances in disease management strategies in field and horticultural crops; developments in eco-friendly integrated disease management; biotechnological approaches for disease management and disease management in forestry and medicinal crops. Each session shall comprise of two lead lectures followed by a few selected oral and poster presentations on the specific thematic areas.
